How to Pivot in TFT: Reading the Lobby and Changing Comps
Pivoting is changing your comp mid-game. Maybe the units you need are already on three other boards, maybe the shop keeps handing you a different carry. Either way, the plan you had at the start was a guess, and the game is telling you it was wrong. Strong players pivot a lot, and earlier than most people think. Forcing the same comp every game works right up until two other people in the lobby are forcing it too.
Why pivot at all
It comes down to the shared pool. Every champion has a limited number of copies for all eight players. If you and two others are rolling for the same units, you're splitting a handful of copies three ways and somebody busts. A comp nobody else is playing, on the other hand, tends to come together on its own.
Signs it is time
- Your units are contested. When you scout and see other people holding the champions you need, your odds of upgrading them drop.
- The game hands you something else. An early two-star you didn't plan for, components that suit another carry, or an augment for a different trait can each make another comp better for you.
- Your plan isn't holding. If you're losing health fast and the board isn't coming together, waiting for it to get better is a gamble.
Staying ready to pivot
A pivot is only cheap if you set it up beforehand. A few habits keep your options open:
- Hold flexible items. Items that work on lots of carries let you switch without wasting them.
- Keep useful pairs on the bench. A pair of a strong unit from another comp costs little to hold and saves you a lot of rerolls later.
- Play what's strong, not just what's in your plan. Early boards are about winning rounds. Use what's strong now and let the comp form around it.
- Scout every few rounds. Knowing what everyone else is playing is how you find out which comps are open.
Making the switch
- Pick the new comp before you sell anything. Make sure nobody else is holding its key units and that your items fit its carry.
- Move the items first. If your items are on a unit you won't keep, sell it at the right moment so they move over to your new carry.
- Keep the board strong while you switch. Swap units one at a time instead of selling half your board at once.
- Finish the switch on your next level or roll-down. Pivots usually come together at the next point where you'd be spending gold anyway.
When not to pivot
Don't pivot just because you can, though. Switching costs gold and a few rounds on a weaker board. If you're already winning fights, you've hit your key two-stars, or the new comp needs more gold than you've got, stay put. A good board you already have beats a slightly better one you might build.
